Cathryn talks to Jeff about putting dignity back into dollars, how we can see the “entitlement” of future generations as an opportunity, and the importance of making sustainability a business imperative.

"We think of credit cards as a tool to pay for things, but how can we vote with our credit cards? How do we use data to unlock insights about our own behaviors?" said Cathryn Peirce, CEO of Carbon Zero Financial, a fintech that measures the carbon footprint of payment transactions using an application programming interface to connect to banks, fintechs and other companies.

Carbon Zero Financial helps financial institutions calculate carbon footprints of their users' spending, use credit card points to offset, and locate sustainable products. The company pivoted to a business-to-business model a few months ago instead of sticking with its original plan to launch a credit card. The company expects to have about 10 partners in place by September; one financial institution it is working with is Clean Energy Credit Union, which uses customer deposits to fund its clean energy loans.

Millennials and those in Gen Z are showing the biggest concern in climate change, with over four in 10 have educated themselves on the environmental aspects of the brands they consume. If banks are to continue to attract this key demographic, offering solutions that act on both the spirit and the letter of their sustainability concerns is crucial. In other words, banks cannot afford to be found greenwashing.

There are also newer challenger banks focused on green living, including Ando, Atmos Financial and Greenpenny. Other companies are in the process of integrating carbon footprint calculators with U.S. financial institutions such as Carbon Zero Financial. Green banking is also likely to garner more interest among consumers with the passage of the Inflation Reduction Act, which incentivizes energy-efficient home upgrades and electric and hybrid vehicle purchases.

I’m an older millennial, not a Gen Zer. These themes unexpectedly hit home for me during a recent panel discussion at Payments Forum.
